While the sub version is pretty nice (since I work on both Macs and PCs), I do worry a bit about security, specifically my passwords being stored on Agilebits' servers (albeit encrypted). With the standalone version I use iCloud for sync, so there's a layer of separation there (hack my iCloud account and all you get is this encrypted file). That’s no different to the file being on Agilebits’ servers though. If they get hacked everything is encrypted still. And it’s arguably more secure since the subscription has the additional layer of the secret key. I've been using the standalone version for years on iOS and Mac OS. I bought it on sale back when the current major version came out (v6, so at least a few years ago). It works perfectly, been using it for years with just the one time purchase. Once the time comes to move to v7 I plan on subscribing to Eero Plus.

I have them at home for my wifi and while Eero Plus isn't worth $10 by itself, it also includes a 1Password subscription and Cloak VPN. They still have to earn my upgrade money – every single year when I decide whether or not to renew my subscription. It's not the cost of entry, it's the incremental cost of increased pricing.
